Josh's Home Tour

Saturday, January 10, 2015

On my recent trip to Brooklyn, I had the pleasure of staying at Josh's hipster abode in Prospect Heights.  Being an artist, it was no surprise that his home was filled with artwork everywhere!  Most of the work was done by Josh's artist friends although he had a couple personal pieces as well.  The vintage furniture pieces, throws, the many plants and quirky touches throughout the home made it a warm and inviting place even without his presence.

I wasn't able to interview Josh but please check out his website here for more information on him and his work!

Dikka and Vega's Home Tour

Friday, December 26, 2014

From the moment I approached Dikka and Vega's home, I felt like I was being transported to a place where sereneitiy, whimsy, love and art all combined and exploded into a magical place.  Their Glendale apartment was cozy but no short on the things that make a home special.  Both being from Bali, Indonesia, their place was filled with sentiments of the their homeland and culture but also combined with vintage americana and little tokens of their love all over.  Read more about Dikka and Vega's home and their story below!

Carmen and Lupita's Home Tour

Sunday, August 17, 2014

We were so happy to meet Carmen and Lupita and visit their apartment in Hollywood, CA.  Since we met the couple through Paula, it was only befitting that Paula was also able to join us on the day of the home tour.  With it's brick walls, local energy and everything you can imagine within walking distance, the couple instantly fell in love with the place.  Over the years, they have filled the home with vibrance, life and color.  After getting to know Carmen and Lupita, we couldn't imagine the place any other way.
Both are in a creative industry and love travel, music, film and anything design related.  Read more about them below.

Jinny and Matt's Home Tour

Thursday, June 26, 2014

As one of my oldest and dearest friends, Jinny has always had a great sense of style accomplished with ambitious DIY tendencies. And the home she's built with her husband Matt (and dog, Ziggy!) is a great reflection of this. They live in an amazing, spacious duplex that mixes character with modern upgrades.

Jinny and Matt were also expectant, first-time parents when we documented their home, and we especially loved the nursery they put together for their son, Liam. Little did we know that Liam would arrive less than a week after we took these photos!

Karen and John's Home Tour

Friday, May 30, 2014

As Creative VP for HauteLook and NordstromRack.com, it's no surprise that Karen’s great style extended to her home in Hollywood, CA where she lives with her husband, John and daughter, Sophie.  Their home was beautiful and the neighborhood was absolutely charming.  We especially loved the home's arched pathways, French style windows and the winding staircase.  It was complimented perfectly with John and Karen's very stylish aesthetic.

We had a blast getting to know Karen's family and having girl time with little Sophie!  They recently decided to move into a larger home so we're happy to have been able to capture their lovely home before the move.

Wasima's Home Tour

Friday, March 28, 2014

Wasima's home is truly a labor of love.  We were introduced to Wasima by Mark and even though this was the first time meeting Wasima, we left feeling inspired and in awe of her passion for design and dedication for making her home uniquely hers.

Wasima's home is a mid century home in South Pasadena, with a beautiful deck overlooking the canyon.  After buying her home, she spent the next few years working with architects, pouring through design details and adding her own personal stories into the decor of her home while still thoughtfully keeping some of the original design elements of her home.  We were amazed how each room or design element had a story behind it and spoke to her eloquent style, her creative talent or her bright personality.

Paula's Home Tour

Thursday, March 6, 2014

Paula welcomed us into her cozy apartment with an amazing brunch set-up: freshly-baked popovers, granola and berries, chilled champagne for mimosas and good, strong coffee. Needless to say, it was an amazing treat and served as the perfect set-up to get to know Paula in her minimalist but stylish home.

Can you describe your style for us?
I do not subscribe to a particular design style, but in the past I tended to really integrate Mid-Century Modern aesthetics.  With this place, however, I went with updated takes on traditional pieces, such as the clean lines on my brown leather sofa or my vintage-y looking rug freshened up with a bright overdyed color.

Susan's Home Tour

Saturday, February 8, 2014

Recent travels took me to San Francisco and I knew I wanted to document Susan's apartment in the Mission. It's great in so many ways: in a prime location just down the street from Bi-rite, Tartine and Deflina (basically all the things you'd want to eat in SF); lots of natural light that floods into a space with built-in character; and most importantly, it's the beautiful and loving home she built with her husband, Andrew.

Mark's Home Tour

Thursday, January 16, 2014

Mark's home blew us away - plain and simple. It's an architectural home, which is exciting in and of itself, but it really is a wonderful reflection of Mark's impeccable style and personality. Every piece in Mark's home serves a purpose or has a story behind it, and it all comes together to create a beautiful, liveable space.

You have an amazing home. Can you tell us more about the architecture and history of it?
Thanks! The home, which is called "Hearn House" after the original owner who commissioned it, was designed by Lloyd Wright (Frank Lloyd Wright's son)in 1952. Hearn wanted a home that opened up to the outdoors and lent itself to entertaining. Lloyd Wright's design succeeds on both counts. I'm told that a yacht served as the inspiration for the design. If you stand down the street looking up, the structure of the living room cantilevered over the carport does indeed resemble the prow of a ship. It's definitely unique.

Esther and Frank's Home Tour

Wednesday, November 6, 2013

We're really excited to bring you today's tour of Esther and Frank's home in Lake Balboa, CA.  We're not sure where to start with this one because not only is Esther a total DIYer but she's also a complete character (they don't call her @quirkyesther for nothing). Her talents go far beyond home decor and include being an amazing chef.  The day we visited, Esther made a delicious meal for us which included her famous ribs, sides and my favorite, the Momofuku crack pie (more on her later).

Although Esther may have been the mastermind behind their many DIY projects, Frank isn't a bystander when it comes to working a paint brush.  Their hard work has resulted in a warm, inviting place that has so many interesting details, it was hard to choose which ones to showcase here.  Their hand stenciled walls, quirky quotes and reupholstered pieces are just a few of the many special things about their home.

Johnney and Krystallin's Home Tour

Thursday, October 31, 2013

Johnney and Krystallin are one hip couple.  Both work in digital advertising and share a fun, kitschy duplex in Culver City, CA. They do a great job of mixing vintage and mid century modern pieces along with incorporating their personalities into the decor.  Krystallin loves anything related to Dia de Los Muertos..and Johnney?  He loves GTA and punk rock!  We just loved shooting their home because everything is so reflective of Johnney & Krystallin's (visit her blog!) fun personalities.

Describe Your Style...
Our style is Mid Century Modern with a splash of Dia de los Muertos. I love retro looking furniture, and I'm fascinated by Mexican art. I think the bright colors are great accents to our dark walls and wood furniture.

Where do you get your inspiration from?
I'm inspired by the vintage furniture I grew up with. I used to think that it was old and out dated, but now I appreciate the simplicity of the style.

Where do you like shopping for home goods?
Everywhere! Some of our furniture is from second hand stores & flea markets, while others are new from retail stores.

What is your favorite home item/find?
Our vintage bar. We found it at a local thrift store for only $150. It was a steal!

Favorite thing about your home...
I love that everything in our home is 100% us. We picked out the floor tiles, the colors on the wall, and all of the furniture. I've never seen another home decorated like ours.

Casey's Home Tour

Sunday, October 20, 2013

We're so excited to share our first home tour! Casey's "tiny house" is ideal in so many ways: it's in a great neighborhood with a lot that's accessible within walking distance (rare in LA!); is a completely standalone bungalow with no shared walls and feels like a completely private space; and most importantly, serves a great blank canvas to showcase his great design sense.

Describe your style
Clean, comfortable and masculine.Vintage-inspired, with a hint of humor.

Where do you get your inspiration from? I mostly look for pieces that fit the feel of what I’m trying to achieve and that fit with the pieces I already have. I’ve been slowly collecting furniture and art, one piece at a time, over the last 10 years, during which I’ve lived in seven apartments in four cities. I try to only buy pieces that I think will work in any setting and that I will want to have forever. I usually start with a need (“I need a dresser,” “I need a chair”) and then look everywhere, sometimes for several months, until I find something I can’t live without. I have a lot of personal design quirks, too – I don’t like rugs, and I prefer a weathered, lacquered finish to woodgrain.

Oh, and I love the look of old James Bond movies.
